Natural disasters like bush fires can cause stress and anxiety for many people. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, and affected people may experience emotions including shock, fear, grief and sadness. It’s important to recognise the difference between a common reaction to a natural disaster and signs you might need extra support.
Beyond Blue have developed a dedicated information page about mental health and bushfires. It contains practical advice about dealing with the emotional impact of bushfires, information about the signs and symptoms of emotional distress, tips for supporting children and young people, and links to several useful websites. Meet Hayden Bowkett, one of our awesome new Education & Awareness presenters.
Hayden is a confident, friendly and down to earth young man who has been the MC for our Walk to the Valley events in the past. With a background in entertaining, singing and acting, we think he is going to be an incredible presenter for our Be Wise Education & Awareness sessions. Along with working full time at Baker McKenzie as a Client Services Assistant, playing sport and creating his own YouTube videos, he will be working for the foundation this year as a presenter and we can’t wait for him to start!
Hayden says his reason in wanting to join the Pat Cronin Foundation team is “to help in the foundation’s endeavours to ‘End the Coward Punch’. Being close family friends with the Cronin's, I have been involved in many of the Walk to the Valley's as well as other areas of the foundation and believed that I would be a great asset to assist in this new venture, to help grow the foundation and spread the message that we all stand for.”

First up for our 5 new presenters is Steve O'Malley, whom we are very honoured to have on board at the foundation.
Not only has Steve been a fire fighter for 31 years, he is a strong advocate for women’s health & safety and prevention of violence against women. He has been an ambassador for White Ribbon Australia, worked in anti-violence education and has recently created a training package on ‘Gender and Disasters’, which is very relevant for what Australia is currently experiencing. Steve’s extensive experience in working with the community and presenting his knowledge will come in handy when he is presenting our education & awareness sessions.
When asked what Steve does in his spare time, his response was:
“I am Grandad to a one year old and married to my soul mate. They keep me happy and busy, but most of my spare time is dedicated to discussing gender equality, modelling respectful relationships, keeping an eye on my own mental health and listening to music…oh and drinking the occasional wine!”
Below is a bit about why Steve wanted to join the Pat Cronin Foundation:
“Pat was a childhood friend of my son Callum throughout Primary school and their adolescence. Lucas also went to Primary school with our daughter Sophie and Matt & Robyn have been friends of ours through that association for the last couple of decades. I was truly honoured when Matt and Robyn asked me to speak after Pat’s death firstly in public on MMM radio then to Pat’s closest friends and family at the Lower Plenty Football Club rooms where his memory will endure forever.
As a firefighter for 31 years I have seen the best and worst of humanity, and the worst is usually by the hand of ‘some’ men. I have dedicated much of the last 20 years in the prevention of gendered violence and I’m acutely aware that whilst most of that work has been in the prevention of violence against women, men are in fact victims of violence and perpetrators of violence in numbers that are off the charts.
Pat was the victim of a wilful and deliberate act of violence by a man whose intent was to injure or kill. Pat’s death will not be in vain because he was universally loved by everyone who had the pleasure to know him and his family. This is my way of hopefully minimising, if not eliminating the risk of another death of a young man at the hands of a coward.”

We have very exciting news here at the Pat Cronin Foundation 🦉 We have welcomed on board 5 new Education Presenters to our team! 2019 was our first year of Education sessions and we had our wonderful Ben O'Toole and Matt Cronin present the sessions. We will now have a team of 6 incredible presenters who will assist us in reaching our 2020 goal of visiting 200 schools and 100 sporting clubs.
We can't wait to introduce them to you all! 💛

Having our community band together and support us in good times and bad over the past 4 years has been incredible. It is amazing to watch the whole of Australia stand together during these tough times and it shows how important community and family is.
We want to thank all of the volunteers, supporters and donators who have been there for the Pat Cronin Foundation and everyone who is doing everything they can to help those in need across Australia right now.
